What is the Slip On Flange
Carbon steel slip on flange also named as SO flange. SO flanges slip over pipes and are designed to bit slightly bigger on the inside than the pipe. They connect to the pipe through a fillet weld at the flange top and bottom.
It is used to insert the pipe into the inner hole of flange, as the flange inner diameter is little bigger than the pipe’s outer diameter, pipe and flange could be connected by lap welding at the top and bottom of the flange.
Carbon steel slip on flanges have a hub with a very low profile. This type of flange is usually connected to a pipe by one or two fillet welds (one outside the flange and one inside the flange), it is however possible to use only a single weld.

Slip-On vs Weld Neck Flange
Slip On Flange (SO)
Weld Neck Flange (WN)
Carbon steel Slip-On Flanges estimated strength under internal pressure is around two-thirds that of a Weld Neck Flange, and their yield stress is around one-third that of a Weld Neck Flange. Slip-on flanges are a form of flat welding flange. Flat welding is only used to weld the outer layer, not the inner layer
Slip on flanges are more commonly found in lower pressure assemblies and become less utilized when a higher stress service calls for a superior connection to the piping assembly. Welding neck flange can provide more powerful service in mechanical stress environment Moreover, weld-neck flanges have a higher life expectancy than slip-on flanges under duress.
Material for Carbon Steel ASTM A105
Standard Scope
ASTM A105 covers forged carbon steel slip on flange and piping components for ambient and higher-temperature service in pressure systems. It also includes pipe fittings, valves and similar parts. The maximum weight manufactured forging part follows by this standard is 10000 bounds (4540kg). The larger forgings can according by the standard A 266/A266M. This specification do not covers tube sheets and hollow cylindrical forgings for pressure vessel shells.
This specification does not covers raw material which round bar and seamless tubular produced piping components.

Advantages of Carbon Steel Slip On Flange
-Lower installation costs
-Easier to align with other parts during installation
-Better leaking proof
-Inner and outer welding on the flange
-Takes less time to cut accurately for the pipelines
-As pipe slides on the flange, it compatible with the lower hub on the slip-on flange
