Introduction of Socket Weld Flange
Socket weld flange is different from other types of flanges by having a socket end where the the pipe end is inserted. Because the connection way of it, it is normally used in low or medium pressure environment.
Basing on the different technical factors, the socket weld flange can be divided into different types, most common difference is material, we have carbon steel socket weld flange, alloy steel carbon steel flange, pipeline material socket weld flange and stainless steel socket weld flange. Another thing is about the sealing face, but because of their main usage in low or medium pressure environment, socket weld flanges always have flat or raised faces.
Manufacturing Standard of Forged Steel Flange
Carbon steel socket weld flange should follow ASME B16.5 standard , this standard covers technical requirements for flanges whose size below 24 inches, including dimensions, pressures, tolerance, tests markings and son on. The types of flanges ASME B 16.5 covers is very wide, such as weld neck flanges, socket weld flanges , slip-on flanges, blind flanges, threaded flanges, lap joint flanges and flange olets.
Advantage and Disadvantage of Socket weld flange
Advantages
(1) In the same size and pressure, it has lower risk of leaking.
(2) Don't have to be treated on the end before welding.
(3) Won't hurt the pipe cause the welding process happens outside
So when the inside welding is difficult to operate, socket weld flange is more recommended.
Disadvantages
(1) Socket weld flange has a higher requirement of welding technique to insure the gap between the pipe and the flange's inner side is less than 1/16 inches.
(2) Since there is gap between the pipe and the flange’s inner side, it may cause the corrosive problem.
So socket weld flange is seldom applied in corrosive or radioactive environment, as this solid buildup at the joint can cause operational and maintenance problems.
Material of Carbon Steel Socket Weld Flange
The most commonly used material in carbon steel socket weld flange is ASTM A105/A105N.
