The client chose the Japanese standard over Chinese (GB) or American (ASTM) standards based on their specific project design requirements and regional practices. Leveraging our extensive product knowledge and inventory system, we quickly confirmed the product specifications. The requirement for hot-dip galvanizing played to our strength – we fully understand that for components used in humid, marine climates, the anti-corrosion layer provided by hot-dip galvanizing is key to resisting corrosion, ensuring the service life of the bolts, and maintaining project safety.

Although the quantity of bolts in this order was not large, we firmly believe that a client's value is never measured by the size of a single order. Therefore, from the moment we received the order, our standard operating procedures were activated.

We strictly separated the bolts and matching nuts according to their different sizes (M10, M12, M16, M20) and packaged them individually. Each small package was clearly labeled. Then, all small packages were neatly packed into sturdy cardboard boxes. The most critical step was affixing a detailed packing list to the outside of each cardboard box, clearly specifying the specifications and quantities of all items inside. This simple sheet saves the client's warehouse staff considerable time otherwise spent on inventory checks, achieving "clear upon opening" and greatly improving subsequent warehousing and distribution efficiency.

Considering the potential risks of rough handling and moisture during international transport, simple cardboard packaging is not enough. We placed all the inner cardboard boxes into custom-made reinforced wooden crates. Our packaging staff carefully filled all gaps inside the wooden crates with ample cushioning materials like bubble wrap, ensuring the goods were firmly fixed inside with no room for movement. This multi-layered protection ensured that these fasteners would arrive at the client's location completely undamaged, with their surface coating intact, after crossing the ocean.

Regardless of order size, the client's needs are paramount. It is this commitment to detail that has gradually transformed us from a mere supplier into a trusted Chinese partner for many overseas clients, helping to fasten together sturdy engineering projects.

What is a Hot-Dip Galvanized Bolt?

In construction projects such as steel structures, power engineering, and industrial piping, bolts are fundamental fasteners. Their mechanical properties and durability directly impact the safety of the entire project. Among them, the hot-dip galvanized bolt, with its strong anti-corrosion ability and high cost-performance ratio, has become a vital component in modern industrial piping and construction engineering.

A hot-dip galvanized bolt is a bolt that has been cleaned, activated, and then immersed in molten zinc. Through a high-temperature metallurgical reaction, a dense and adherent zinc-iron alloy coating forms on the bolt's surface. This process not only provides a protective anti-corrosion layer but also offers sacrificial anode protection from the zinc. Even if the coating is locally damaged, it continues to protect the base metal from corrosion.

Main Advantages of Hot-Dip Galv Bolt and Nut

Corrosion Resistance: In general atmospheric environments, the anti-corrosion effect of the hot-dip galvanized coating is better than that of ordinary treatment methods.

Adhesion and Wear Resistance: The coating forms a metallurgical bond with the bolt and nut metal, making it damaged during transport and installation.

Coverage Protection: The hot-dip galvanizing process can cover complex areas such as threads and recesses, preventing the bolt from corroding.

High Cost-Effectiveness: Although the initial cost is higher than that of electro-galvanizing, its extremely long service life and maintenance cycle significantly reduce the overall application cost.

Common Types of Bolts

As the most basic fastening connectors, bolts come in many types to meet different engineering needs:

hdg stud bolt

By Performance Grade: Common grades include 4.8, 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9. The higher the number, the higher the strength. High-strength bolts are often used in critical load-bearing structures.

By Head Shape: Hex head bolts, flange bolts, round head bolts, square head bolts, stud bolts, etc., to suit different installation tools and fastening requirements.

By Thread Type: Fully threaded and partially threaded. Partially threaded bolts have an unthreaded section on the shank that provides better shear resistance.

By Function: Examples include anchor bolts, torsion-shear high-strength bolts, chemical anchors, etc.

Among the many types of bolts, those treated with a hot-dip galvanized surface coating hold a dominant position in outdoor and corrosive environments due to their unique protective advantages.

Which Materials Need Hot-Dip Galvanizing?

Not all bolts require hot-dip galvanizing. Typically, carbon steel and low-alloy steel bolts are the main candidates for hot-dip galvanizing because they are prone to rusting. For example, bolts made of commonly used materials like Q235, Q345, 35CrMo, 45# steel, ASTM A193 B7/B7M, A320 L7/L7M, etc., when widely used in outdoor, humid, or corrosive environments, must undergo strong anti-corrosion treatments like hot-dip galvanizing. Stainless steel bolts, on the other hand, have inherent corrosion resistance and generally do not require hot-dip galvanizing.

Relevant Domestic and International Standards

The production and quality control of hot-dip galvanized bolts follow strict standard specifications:

Chinese Standards: Mainly based on GB/T 13912-2020 "Metallic coatings - Hot dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles - Specifications and test methods," which specifies requirements for coating thickness, uniformity, adhesion, etc. Bolt product standards like GB/T 5780 also reference galvanizing requirements.

International Standards: Common ones include ISO 1461 "Hot dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles — Specifications and test methods," as well as American ASTM A153, British BS EN ISO 1461, etc.

Industry Standards: Specific sectors like electric power and transportation (e.g., railway TB/T 1498) and telecommunications have more detailed additional regulations.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Bolts vs. Electro-Galvanized Bolts

These are the two most common zinc coating methods for corrosion protection. Their main differences are:

Comparison Item

Hot-Dip Galvanized Bolt

Electro-Galvanized Bolt (Eco-Zinc / Blue-White Zinc)

Process Principle

High-temperature immersion in molten zinc; metallurgical bonding.

Electrolytic reaction; zinc ions deposit on the bolt surface.

Coating Thickness

Thick, typically 50-150μm, offering strong corrosion protection.

Thin, generally 5-25μm, offering relatively weaker corrosion protection.

Appearance

Dull, slightly rough, may have a spangled or smoothed finish.

Bright, smooth, aesthetically pleasing, can be color passivated.

Adhesion/Wear Resist.

Very strong

Weaker,during installation.

Cost

Higher initial cost.

Lower initial cost.

Applicable Environment

Outdoor, heavy corrosion, long-term use environments.

Indoor, dry environments where appearance is important.

Hydrogen Embrittlement Risk

Low (high temperature can relieve some internal stress).

Higher (electroplating process can introduce hydrogen).

Other Surface Anti-Corrosion Treatments

Besides hot-dip and electro-galvanizing, bolts have many other surface treatment options:

Dacromet (Zinc-Chromium Coating): No hydrogen embrittlement, excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistant, but the coating is thin and not wear-resistant.

Mechanical Plating: Suitable for small parts, no hydrogen embrittlement, uniform coating, but relatively low hardness.

Phosphating: Primarily used as a base for painting or for short-term rust prevention; its own anti-corrosion ability is limited.

Blackening/Black Oxide: Aesthetically pleasing, but rust prevention is very weak; often requires supplemental oiling.

Cementation/Zinc Diffusion Coating: Corrosion protection close to hot-dip galvanizing, with better dimensional precision control.

Application and Characteristics of PTFE (Teflon) Coated Bolts

特氟龙六角螺栓&螺母

PTFE coated bolts refer to bolts with a surface coating of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Teflon is known for its extremely low friction coefficient, excellent chemical inertness, wide temperature resistance range (-200°C to +260°C), and superior non-stick properties.

Application: Widely used in food machinery, chemical equipment, plastic molds, high-temperature ovens, and other fields, especially where non-stick, insulation, chemical resistance, or high cleanliness is required.

Characteristics: Its anti-corrosion mechanism relies on a perfect physical barrier, but the coating is relatively soft. Its wear resistance and scratch resistance are inferior to metal coatings. Special tools are needed during installation to avoid damaging the coating.

Application Scope

Due to their outstanding durability, hot-dip galvanized bolts have become the "standard" in the following fields:

Electric Power & Communication: Transmission towers, support brackets, substation structures.

Transportation Infrastructure: Highway guardrails, bridge components, railway track fasteners, port machinery.

Building Steel Structures: Factories, warehouses, stadiums, steel structure connections in large public buildings.

Municipal Engineering: Lamp posts, traffic signal poles, underground pipeline supports.

Agriculture & Marine: Greenhouses, agricultural machinery, coastal facilities (often requiring higher specifications).

General Outdoor Facilities: Fences, scaffolding, outdoor furniture.

When selecting a surface treatment for bolts, one must comprehensively consider the service environment, required anti-corrosion life, cost budget, and installation conditions. Hot-dip galvanized bolts, with their unparalleled comprehensive protection performance and economic benefits, play an indispensable role in the battle against natural corrosion. They are the "durable armor" that engineers give to the steel skeleton, silently safeguarding the safety and stability of everything from infrastructure to large industrial systems, and providing the solid material foundation for achieving "century-old projects."
