ASME B16.5 is a standard established by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for pipe flanges and flange connections. It specifies detailed dimensions, pressure ratings, materials, and facing types for flanges to meet various industrial applications. ASME B16.5 Class 300 flanges, as an important type, are widely used in industries such as oil, chemical, natural gas, power, pharmaceutical, and food.

The ASME B16.5 standard includes various flange types, each with specific design features, applications, and manufacturing requirements. Commonly used forged flange types in industrial piping systems include: Weld neck flange (WN), Slip on flange (SO), Blind flange (BL), Socket weld flange (SW), Threaded flange (TH), and Lap joint flange (LAPJ). Each type has unique design characteristics and applications.

Sealing Face Types of Class 300 Pipe Flanges

The flange sealing face is the contact surface between two flanges in a connection. It can be flat, raised, tongue-and-groove, etc. By using gaskets and bolts, the two flange faces are tightly joined to ensure sealing and prevent medium leakage, enabling safe and reliable transport.

Class 300 pipe flange sealing faces include seven types: FF (Flat Face),  RF (Raised Face), RTJ (Ring Type Joint), M (Male), FM (Female), T (Tongue), and G (Groove). Among them, FF, RF, and RTJ are more common.

Flat Face (FF):Common in flat face flanges, with a smooth surface, simple design, easy processing. Large contact area with gasket, requiring high compression force. Used in high-pressure or high-temperature piping. Disadvantages: gasket placement is difficult during installation; gasket tends to extend or move sideways after pre-tightening.

Raised Face (RF):Widely used with non-metallic flat gaskets, clad gaskets, metal jacketed gaskets, and spiral wound gaskets. A raised smooth surface that can also have serrated concentric grooves. Provides a real-time seal under pressure. Disadvantage: large contact area makes gasket squeeze out sideways and difficult to compress tightly.

Ring Type Joint (RTJ):High-precision all-metal sealing face designed for high pressure and temperature, suitable for extreme conditions. Available in various materials (stainless steel, carbon steel) with excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Cross-section shapes: oval and octagonal. Good sealing performance, easy to install and remove for frequent operations. Disadvantages: complex processing, higher cost than FF and RF.

Types of Material

ASME B16.5 specifies steel types suitable for different pressure ratings and service conditions, such as carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel, with clear requirements for chemical composition and mechanical properties. For special materials or environments (e.g., corrosion resistance or high temperature), additional standards like ASTM A182 may apply.

Application of Forged Flanges
