Socket weld elbow is a kind of high-pressure pipeline connection fittings, belonging to the forged socket series fittings, socket weld elbow processed with internal grooves to form a “socket” that can be connected with another pipe or tube. When connecting, the pipe is inserted into the socket hole of the socket elbow, and then the two are connected together by welding or other means to form a solid joint.

Socket weld elbow specifications according to the bending angle is divided into two kinds of 45 ° and 90 °, the pressure level of 3000LB, 6000LB and 9000LB, the implementation of ASME B16.11 standard. They are mainly used in petrochemical, medicine and health, nuclear power, environmental protection and other industrial fields that require high pressure capacity and dimensional accuracy. The products are made by mold forging and lathe machining process, with high strength and sealing, the material covers carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel three categories.

Features and Advantages of Socket weld Fittings

High Strength: made by forging process, the material is dense, with high strength and pressure resistance, able to withstand higher pressure in the pipeline.

Good sealing: socket weld connection can provide a strong and leak-proof connection, suitable for piping systems conveying toxic, flammable or expensive media, as well as high-pressure systems.

No Beveling Required: Unlike butt welds, socket welds do not require beveling of the pipe ends, simplifying weld preparation.

Easy to Center: The socket design helps to center the pipe for easy installation and welding.

Corrosion resistance: socket weld elbows made of stainless steel, alloy steel and other materials have good corrosion resistance and can be used in corrosive media piping systems to extend the service life of the pipeline.

Easy to install: compared with other connections, the installation of socket weld elbow is relatively simple, does not require special tools or equipment, can reduce the installation time and cost.

Socket Weld Elbow Types

Classification By Angle

45° Socket Elbow: used for pipelines needing to make a 45° turn position, can not affect the medium flow efficiency under the premise of realizing the medium angle of the direction change, suitable for the relatively abundant space, the turn angle of the pipeline requires moderate layout. 90° socket elbow: one of the most widely used types, used for pipelines needing to turn at right angles to the scene, in all types of industrial pipelines, water supply and drainage pipelines have a large number of applications, to meet most of the needs of right-angle turns.

Classification by Material

Carbon Steel : ASTM A105 / A105N, ASTM A350 LF2 / LF3, A694 F42 / 46 / 52 / 56 / 65 / 70

Lower cost, higher strength, suitable for conveying water, steam and other non-corrosive media, low-pressure piping systems.

Stainless steel : A182 F304/304L/304H - F316/316L - F317 - F310S - F321 - F347 - F904L, A182 F51/53/55/60

With excellent corrosion resistance, it can adapt to a variety of corrosive media environment, and commonly used grades include 304, 304L, 316L, 316L, 321 and so on. The commonly used grades include 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, etc. Among them, 316, 316L stainless steel also has good resistance to intergranular corrosion and pitting resistance, suitable for chemical, pharmaceutical and other corrosive media occasions.

Alloy steel: ASTM A182 F5 / F9 / F11 / F12 / F22 / F91 / F92

By adding chromium, molybdenum, vanadium and other alloying elements to the steel, the high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance of the elbow is improved, and it is suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure industrial piping, such as steam piping in the power industry.

Differences between Socket Weld and Butt Weld Fittings

Socket welding fittings and butt welding fittings are the two main ways of connecting pipes. They have significant differences in connection methods, application scope and performance characteristics. Socket welding pipe fittings are connected by inserting the pipe into the socket of the pipe fitting and then performing fillet welding. This method is easy to install, does not require beveling of the pipe, and can provide good sealing. Therefore, it is often used in small-diameter and medium-low pressure systems with high requirements for leakage prevention.

Butt welding pipe fittings align the two ends of the pipe and the pipe fitting directly, and perform full penetration welding through the bevel to form a continuous and smooth internal flow channel. This connection method has higher strength and better corrosion resistance. It can withstand higher pressure and temperature and is suitable for large-diameter and critical high-pressure, high-temperature or corrosive medium pipeline systems.

In short, socket welding has more advantages in small-diameter and medium-low pressure occasions due to its convenient installation and good sealing, while butt welding has become the first choice for pipeline connection under high pressure, large diameter and harsh working conditions due to its excellent strength, durability and unobstructed characteristics for fluids.
