ASTM A790 UNS S32205 is also known as 2205 duplex. It is highly considered for excellent corrosion resistance features. It has the combinations of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steel. Its exclusive chemical composition gives unique properties, due to which it gives various combination of properties such as high strength, outstanding corrosion resistance and good toughness properties.
It gives high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, primarily in chloride conditions, because of its high chromium and molybdenum element. It gives resistance to pressure corrosion cracking which makes it appropriate for environments which gives risk due to pressure corrosion cracking. It is even gives resistance against abrasion corrosion which is the concern for piping arrangements which high-speed liquids.
What is A790 S32205 material?
A790 S32205 material refers to a type of duplex stainless steel, specifically designated under the ASTM A790 standard, which is a seamless and welded pipe made from a stainless steel alloy with excellent corrosion resistance, commonly known as "2205" grade, due to its combination of austenitic and ferritic microstructure; making it ideal for applications in harsh corrosive environments like marine or chemical processing industries.
Duplex stainless steel:
This material is classified as a duplex stainless steel, meaning it has a mixed microstructure of both austenite and ferrite, providing a balance of good corrosion resistance and high strength.
Corrosion resistance:
Due to its composition, A790 S32205 offers excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, particularly in chloride-containing environments.
Applications:
This material is frequently used in applications like offshore oil and gas pipelines, chemical processing equipment, marine components, pulp and paper industry, and applications where high chloride concentrations are present
What is A790 pipe?
A790 pipe is a standard specification for stainless steel pipes that are seamless or welded. It covers the composition, mechanical properties, and manufacturing process for these pipes.
Properties of A790 pipe
A790 pipes are made from duplex stainless steel, which has a balanced microstructure of austenite and ferrite.
This composition gives A790 pipes superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
A790 pipes are strong and have good impact toughness.

ASTM A790 Standard Scope
This specification covers seamless and straight-seam welded ferritic/austenitic steel pipe intended for general corrosive service, with particular emphasis on resistance to stress corrosion cracking. These steels are susceptible to embrittlement if used for prolonged periods at elevated temperatures.
Materials and Manufacture
The pipe shall be made by the seamless or an automatic welding process, with no addition of filler metal in the welding operation.
At the manufacturer’s option, pipe may be either hot-finished or cold-finished. The pipe shall be pickled free of scale. When bright annealing is used, pickling is not necessary.
Discard—A sufficient discard shall be made from each ingot to secure freedom from injurious piping and undue segregation.
All pipe shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition as shown in Table 1. For seamless pipe, as an alternate to final heat treatment in a continuous furnace or batch-type furnace, immediately following hot forming while the temperature of the pipes is not less than the specified minimum solution treatment temperature, pipes may be individually quenched in water or rapidly cooled by other means.

What is the difference between UNS S31803 and UNS S32205?
When discussing UNS S31803 and UNS S32205, it's crucial to understand they are both duplex stainless steels within the 2205 family, meaning they share many similarities.1 However, there are key distinctions:
Chemical Composition:
The primary difference lies in the levels of certain alloying elements, particularly nitrogen, chromium, and molybdenum.UNS S32205 generally has higher levels of these elements compared to UNS S31803.
This enhanced chemical composition in S32205 translates to improved corrosion resistance.
Corrosion Resistance:
Due to the higher alloying content, UNS S32205 exhibits superior corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-containing environments. This makes it more suitable for harsh conditions, such as those found in marine and chemical processing applications.
While UNS S31803 offers good corrosion resistance, it is generally considered less resistant than S32205.
Strength:
The increased nitrogen content in UNS S32205 contributes to slightly higher strength compared to UNS S31803.
Historical Context:
UNS S31803 was the original specification for 2205 duplex stainless steel. UNS S32205 was developed as manufacturers consistently produced material at the upper end of the S31803 composition range, leading to a more defined and improved standard.
In Summary:
Both S31803 and S32205 are excellent duplex stainless steels.
S32205 offers enhanced corrosion resistance and slightly higher strength due to its higher alloying content.
S32205 is often preferred for more demanding applications.
S31803 can be a cost effective option for less demanding applications.
Essentially, UNS S32205 is an enhanced version of UNS S31803, providing improved performance in aggressive environments.
What is the difference between uns S32205 and uns S32750?
UNS S32205 is a standard duplex stainless steel, while UNS S32750 is a super duplex stainless steel, meaning the latter has significantly higher corrosion resistance, particularly against pitting and crevice corrosion, due to a higher content of chromium and molybdenum, making it suitable for more aggressive environments compared to the standard duplex grade S32205; both are stainless steel alloys with a dual-phase microstructure of austenite and ferrite, but the super duplex has a much higher level of performance in harsh conditions.
Corrosion resistance:
S32750 (super duplex) offers superior corrosion resistance, especially against pitting and crevice corrosion, compared to S32205 (duplex).
Chemical composition:
S32750 typically has a higher chromium and molybdenum content than S32205, which enhances its corrosion resistance.
Applications:
S32750 is often used in demanding applications like offshore platforms, chemical processing, and seawater environments where extreme corrosion resistance is required, while S32205 is suitable for less aggressive environments.

UNS S32205 Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe Machining
The machinability of this grade is low due to its high strength. The cutting speeds are almost 20% lower than that of grade 304.
UNS S32205 Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe Fabrication
The fabrication of this grade is also affected by its strength. Bending and forming of this grade requires equipment with larger capacity. Ductility of grade 2205 is lesser than austenitic grades; therefore, cold heading is not possible on this grade. In order to carry out cold heading operations on this grade, intermediate annealing should be carried out.
