The ASME B16.5 SS316 weld neck flange is forged from stainless steel 316 material, which has excellent corrosion resistance and can be used for a long time in various corrosive media environments. The butt welding connection method makes the connection between the flange and the pipeline more secure and reliable. The welded joint has high strength and can withstand large pressure and temperature changes, effectively avoiding leakage problems caused by weak connections. The design of the weld neck flange structure is reasonable, with accurate positioning during installation, which facilitates construction operations and also provides convenience for subsequent maintenance and repair.

Common weld neck flanges can be divided into two types: weld neck flanges(WN) and long weld neck flanges(LWN): conventional weld neck flanges strictly follow standard requirements for neck length. After welding with the pipeline, the stress distribution is uniform, the strength is high, and it is suitable for high-pressure, high-temperature but relatively stable working conditions; The neck of the long weld neck flange is a significantly elongated "straight pipe section" that far exceeds the length of the standard butt welded flange. This special design can effectively disperse welding stress, improve fatigue resistance, absorb thermal expansion, contraction, and vibration, and is suitable for extreme working conditions, but at a higher cost.

WN FLANGE SEALING FACE

ASME B16.5 SS316 weld neck flange can be mainly divided into common types such as raised face (RF), full face (FF), and ring connecting face (RTJ) according to different sealing surface forms. The protruding flange structure is simple and widely used; Full plane flanges are used for low-pressure and low sealing requirements pipelines; The flange of the ring connection surface has good sealing performance and is suitable for high-risk medium pipelines. In addition, the concave convex surface (MFM) and tenon groove surface (TG) flanges also play a role in high sealing requirements.

Analysis of ASME B16.5 Standard

ASME B16.5 is a standard developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for pipe flanges and flange fittings. This standard has been widely recognized and applied worldwide, becoming an important basis for pipe flange design, manufacturing, inspection, and installation.

This standard specifies the pressure temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing, and identification methods for ports of flanges. In terms of size, it covers various specifications from 1/2 inch to 24 inches, meeting the connection needs of different pipeline systems; The pressure levels include Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and a size range of 1/2 inch to 12 inches. The pressure level is Class 2500, which can meet the requirements of different pressure conditions.

At the same time, the ASME B16.5 standard also emphasizes product quality control, with clear requirements for the manufacturing process of flanges, the chemical composition and mechanical properties of raw materials, non-destructive testing, etc., to ensure that the produced flange products have stable and reliable quality and can operate safely in various harsh industrial environments. Flanges produced in accordance with this standard have good interchangeability, making it convenient for flanges produced by different manufacturers to be used in the same pipeline system, reducing the cost of engineering construction and maintenance.

Dimensions and Weight of ASME B16.5 SS316 WN Flange

The dimensions of ASME B16.5 SS316 weld neck flanges are strictly in accordance with the standard specifications, and there are differences in the structural dimensions of flanges with different nominal sizes and pressure ratings.

Taking common dimensions as an example, for a 1-inch, Class 150 flange, the outer diameter is about 108 millimeters, the center circle diameter of the bolt hole is about 79.25 millimeters, the number of bolt holes is 4, the bolt hole diameter is about 18.3 millimeters, and the flange thickness is about 14.3 millimeters;

The 150 pound flange with a nominal size of 2 inches has an outer diameter of approximately 127 millimeters, a bolt hole center circle diameter of approximately 98.4 millimeters, 4 bolt holes, a bolt hole diameter of approximately 15.7 millimeters, and a flange thickness of approximately 14.2 millimeters.

The weight of the flange is determined by factors such as its size, pressure rating, and machining allowance during the manufacturing process. Generally speaking, the larger the nominal size and the higher the pressure rating, the heavier the flange accordingly.

For example, a 150 pound grade stainless steel 316 weld neck flange with a size of 1 inch weight approximately 1 kg; size of 2 inch Class 150 WN flange of this type weight approximately 2.58 kg; The Class 300 ASME B16.5 stainless steel 316 weld neck flange with a nominal size of 4 inches can weigh around 11.2 kg. Accurate size and weight data not only facilitate the calculation and application of flanges in the design and selection stage, but also provide important reference for transportation, storage, and installation construction, ensuring the smooth progress of the project.

Characteristics of Stainless Steel 316 Material

Stainless steel 316 material has various excellent properties and characteristics, making it an ideal material for manufacturing butt welded flanges.

Firstly, excellent corrosion resistance is one of the most prominent features of ASME B16.5 stainless steel 316 WN flanges. Due to its molybdenum content, it can effectively improve its resistance to corrosive media such as chloride ions. Compared with stainless steel 304, it has better corrosion resistance in highly corrosive environments such as seawater, chemical solutions, and acidic gases, and is less prone to corrosion damage, greatly extending the service life of the flange and reducing equipment failures and safety hazards caused by corrosion.

Secondly, stainless steel 316 has excellent high-temperature strength and heat resistance. In high temperature environments, its mechanical properties can still remain stable and there will be no significant decrease in strength due to temperature rise. It can withstand high working temperatures and is suitable for pipeline systems in industries such as petrochemicals and power plants with high temperature conditions.

In addition, ASME B16.5 SS316 weld neck flanges also have good processing and welding performance. In the process of manufacturing butt welded flanges, forging, cutting, stamping and other processing operations can be conveniently carried out to ensure the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the flanges; At the same time, it has good welding performance, high welding joint strength, and is not prone to welding defects such as cracks and pores during the welding process, ensuring reliable connection quality between flanges and pipelines.

In addition, stainless steel 316 material also has certain toughness and wear resistance, which can withstand certain impact loads and friction. It is not easy to break and wear during use, further ensuring the performance and safety of the flange.

WN Flange VS SO Flange

WN VS SO

Although ASME B16.5 SS316 weld neck flange and slip on flanges are both made of stainless steel 316 material, there are significant differences in structural form, connection method, performance characteristics, and applicable occasions.

Structural form: The neck of the weld neck flange is relatively long and has a certain taper. The connection between the flange and the pipeline is achieved by welding the neck of the flange to the pipeline; The neck of the slip on flange is shorter, and the connection between the flange and the pipeline is to insert the pipeline into the sealing surface groove of the flange, and then weld it on the outside of the flange.

Connection strength: Due to its long neck and full penetration welding with the pipeline, the WN flange has a large welding joint area and high connection strength, which can withstand large pressure, temperature changes, and vibration loads. It is suitable for high-pressure, high-temperature, flammable, explosive, and vibrating pipeline systems; The welding method for SO flange is fillet welding, which has a relatively small welding joint area and low connection strength, and can only withstand low pressure and temperature. It is generally suitable for low-pressure, room temperature, and non violent vibration pipeline systems.

Sealing performance: The sealing surface of the weld neck flange has high machining accuracy, close contact with the gasket, and high connection strength, which can effectively prevent medium leakage and has excellent sealing performance; SO flanges are prone to deformation and leakage of the sealing surface due to the difficulty in ensuring concentricity between the sealing surface and the pipeline, as well as low connection strength, resulting in relatively poor sealing performance when subjected to pressure and temperature changes.

Installation difficulty: The installation of WN flanges requires high technical skills from welding processes and operators, and non-destructive testing is required after welding. The installation process is relatively complex and takes a long time; The installation of slip on flanges is relatively simple and convenient, the welding operation is easy to master, the installation efficiency is high, and the construction cost is low.

Application scope: Stainless steel 316 weld neck flanges are widely used in industries with high requirements for pipeline systems, such as petrochemicals, natural gas, electricity, and pharmaceuticals, for connecting high-pressure, high-temperature, and highly corrosive pipelines; Slip on flanges are mainly used in low-pressure, room temperature civil and industrial pipeline systems such as water supply and drainage, heating, air conditioning, etc., for general pipeline connections.

ASME B16.5 SS316 weld neck flanges, with their strict standard specifications, reasonable size and weight, reliable materials, and excellent performance, can provide strong guarantees for the safe and stable operation of pipeline systems, whether in high-pressure and high-temperature harsh working conditions or in highly corrosive environments. They are an indispensable and important accessory in industrial pipeline design applications.
