What is ASTM A182
ASTM A182 is a material standard for high-pressure forged flanges in the American standard. It includes chemical composition, mechanical properties, and heat treatment requirements for various grades of alloy materials, stainless steel materials, and duplex stainless steel materials.
What is ASTM A182 Socket Flange
ASTM A182 socket flange refers to a type of flange forged using materials such as alloys, stainless steel, or duplex stainless steel included in the ASTM A182 standard as raw materials. The connection method of socket flanges is to insert one end of the pipe into the flange ring ladder, and achieve pipe connection by welding on the pipe end and outside. There are two types: with neck and without neck. The necked pipe flange has good rigidity, small welding deformation, and good sealing performance, and can be used in applications with pressure ranging from 1.0 to 10.0 MPa.The type B flange for vessels is also a socket welding flange, used for applications with high sealing requirements.
How to Forge Socket Flanges that meet the Standard Size Requirements
ASEM B16.5 is a production standard for American flanges, which includes ASTM A182 socket flanges with sizes ranging from 1/2 inch to 3 inches and pressure ranges of CLASS150, 300, 600, 1500.This standard covers pressure temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing and methods of designating openings for pipe flanges and flanged fittings.

MATERIALS
The ASTM A182 material standard includes a variety of grades of alloy materials, stainless steel materials, and duplex stainless steel materials, with the most common materials listed in the following table.
Material Properties of ASTM A182 F316/316L
Chemical Composition
CHEMICAL | LIMITS | C | Mn | P | S | Si | Ni | Cr | Mo | N |
ASTM A182 F316 | MIN | 10.00 | 16.00 | 2.00
MAX | 0.08 | 2.00 | 0.045 | 0.030 | 1.00 | 14.00 | 18.00 | 3.00 | 0.01
ASTM A182 F316L | MIN | 10.00 | 16.00 | 2.00
MAX | 0.03 | 2.00 | 0.045 | 0.030 | 1.00 | 15.00 | 18.00 | 3.00 | 0.01 |
As can be seen from the chemical composition table above, the main difference between ASTM A182 F316 and 316L is the carbon content. 316L stainless steel is a low carbon version of 316 stainless steel. The lower carbon content in 316L stainless steel can reduce harmful carbide precipitation caused by welding.
Mechanical Properties
MATERIAL | ASTM A182 F316 | ASTM A182 F316L |
T.S (MPA) | 515 min | 485 min |
Y.S (MPA) | 205 min | 170 min |
EL % | 30 min | 30 min |
R/A % | 50 min | 50 min |
From the above data, it can be seen that the mechanical properties of ASTM A182 F316 stainless steel pipe are stronger, with tensile strength and yield strength greater than that of TP316L stainless steel pipe. This is due to the different carbon (C) content, which is a strong austenite-forming element that can significantly increase the strength of stainless steel.
Advantage of ASTM A182 Socket Flange
Strong corrosion resistance
Good sealing performance
High strength and stability
Convenient installation
