Hastelloy C276 belongs to the nickel-molybdenum-chromium-iron-tungsten series of nickel-based alloys, and is one of the most corrosion-resistant modern metal materials. It is strengthened by solid solution and a small amount of tungsten is added. Its high molybdenum content can effectively prevent local corrosion, including pitting. It is mainly resistant to wet chlorine, various oxidizing chlorides, chloride salt solutions, sulfuric acid and oxidizing salts, and has good corrosion resistance in low and medium temperature hydrochloric acid. In addition, the low carbon content prevents the formation of carbides during welding, thereby maintaining its resistance to intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone of the welded joint. In addition, Hastelloy C276 has good ductility and is easy to form and weld. Therefore, in the past three decades, it has been widely used in harsh corrosive environments such as chemical, petrochemical, flue gas desulfurization, pulp and paper, environmental protection and other industrial fields. Alloy C276 is suitable for various chemical process industries containing oxidizing and reducing media. The higher content of molybdenum and chromium makes the alloy resistant to chloride ion corrosion, and tungsten further improves its corrosion resistance. Hastelloy C276 pipe is one of the only materials that can resist corrosion from moist chlorine, hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide solutions. The alloy has significant corrosion resistance to high concentration chloride solutions (such as ferric chloride and cupric chloride).
(1) The hot working temperature range of Hastelloy C-276 is 1200℃~950℃, and the cooling method is water cooling or rapid air cooling.
(2) To ensure the best anti-corrosion performance, heat treatment should be carried out after hot working, and the workpiece should be directly added to the heated heat treatment furnace.
(1) The work hardening rate of Hastelloy C276 pipe is greater than that of austenitic stainless steel, so the processing equipment needs to be selected. The workpiece should be in the solution heat treatment state, and there should be intermediate annealing during the cold rolling process.
(2) If the cold rolling deformation is greater than 15%, the workpiece needs to be subjected to secondary solution treatment.
(1) The solution treatment temperature range of Hastelloy C276 is 1100℃~1160℃.
(2) The cooling method is water quenching. Materials with a thickness of less than 1.5mm can also use rapid air cooling. If air cooling is used, it should be cooled from 1000℃ to 600℃ within 2 minutes.

1. What is the ASTM standard for Hastelloy C276 pipe?
For Hastelloy C276 pipes, the primary ASTM standard is ASTM B622, which specifically covers seamless pipe and tube made from Nickel - Molybdenum - Chromium alloys (including UNS N10276, or Hastelloy C276). Additionally, ASTM B619 is the standard specification for welded pipe of these same alloys, while ASTM B626 covers welded tube, ensuring that both seamless and welded forms of Hastelloy C276 piping adhere to stringent quality and performance criteria for their respective applications.
2. What is the difference between C276 and ss316?
The core difference between Hastelloy C276 and SS316 (316 stainless steel) lies in their chemical composition and, consequently, their level of corrosion resistance and cost. SS316 is an austenitic stainless steel with good general corrosion resistance, especially to chlorides, thanks to its molybdenum content (typically 2-3%). However, Hastelloy C276 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium superalloy with significantly higher amounts of nickel (around 57%), molybdenum (15-17%), and chromium (14.5-16.5%), plus tungsten. This enriched composition gives Hastelloy C276 superior resistance to a much wider range of extremely aggressive corrosive environments, including strong acids, wet chlorine gas, and severe pitting and crevice corrosion, where SS316 would likely fail.
3. What is the difference between Hastelloy C22 and Hastelloy C276?
While Hastelloy C22 and Hastelloy C276 are both corrosion-resistant nickel-chromium-molybdenum high-temperature alloys, their main difference lies in the chemical composition optimized for different corrosive environments. Compared with C276, Hastelloy C22 has a higher chromium content (about 22%) and a slightly lower molybdenum content, which makes it perform well in strongly oxidizing conditions and has enhanced resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, especially in mixed oxidant environments. Conversely, Hastelloy C276 has a slightly lower chromium content (about 16%) but a higher molybdenum content (about 16%), and has excellent corrosion resistance in a wider range of oxidizing and strongly reducing environments, including wet chlorine, hypochlorites, and strong acids such as sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, and its versatility is highly respected.
