Inconel 601 pipeis a pipe made based on Inconel 601 alloy, which is a nickel-chromium-iron alloy with aluminum added to enhance its high temperature performance.
Inconel 601 is a nickel-chromium alloy used for applications that require resistance to corrosion and heat. This nickel alloy stands out due to its resistance to high temperature oxidation, remaining highly resistant to oxidation through 2200°F. Alloy 601 develops a tightly adherent oxide scale which resists spalling even under conditions of severe thermal cycling.
This nickel alloy has good high temperature strength, and retains its ductility after long service exposure. It has good resistance to aqueous corrosion, high mechanical strength, and is readily formed, machined and welded. Inconel 601’s properties make it a material of broad utility in fields like thermal processing, chemical processing, pollution control, aerospace, and power generation.

What is the difference between Inconel 600 and 601?
What is Inconel 600?
Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy that is used in a variety of applications where corrosion resistance and heat resistance are required. The alloy has excellent mechanical properties and can be fabricated into parts that are resistant to high temperatures and corrosive environments. Inconel 600 is also non-magnetic and has a low coefficient of thermal expansion.
What is Inconel 601?
Inconel 601 is a nickel-chromium-iron alloy that is used in a variety of applications where corrosion resistance and heat resistance are required. The alloy has excellent mechanical properties and can be fabricated into parts that are resistant to high temperatures and corrosive environments. Inconel 601 is also non-magnetic and has a low coefficient of thermal expansion.
Chemical composition
Inconel 600: Nickel (Ni) content is about 72%, chromium (Cr) 14 - 17%, iron (Fe) 6 - 10%, carbon (C) ≤ 0.15%. Based on nickel, chromium provides oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance, and a certain amount of iron helps to reduce costs and improve certain properties.
Inconel 601: Nickel content is 58 - 63%, chromium content is 21 - 25%, iron content is 11 - 15%, and 1.0 - 1.7% aluminum (Al) is added, and carbon (C) ≤ 0.10%. The higher chromium content and the addition of aluminum are the key to distinguishing it from Inconel 600. Aluminum can form a dense aluminum oxide protective film at high temperatures.
Corrosion resistance
Inconel 600: It has good resistance in many common corrosive environments, such as sulfuric acid, alkali solution and salt solution under specific concentrations and conditions. However, under certain conditions, such as in high-temperature caustic solutions, stress corrosion cracking may occur.
Inconel 601: Not only does it have the same general corrosion resistance as Inconel 600, it also performs better in high-temperature corrosion environments, especially in high-temperature oxidizing gas environments, where it has better tolerance.

Is Inconel stronger than stainless steel?
For starters, Inconel is significantly more costly than stainless steel alloys. At high temperatures, Inconel has substantially superior corrosion resistance and strength. Stainless steel, on the other hand, is stronger at lower temperatures. The primary deciding factors for choosing between the two alloys are cost, temperature, and strength. If you need a low-cost, high-strength product, stainless steel is usually the way to go. If an air-critical component with high-temperature requirements is necessary, Inconel is a far superior alloy.
Which is better Inconel or hastelloy?
Inconel and Hastelloy are both high-performance alloys, but they excel in different environments. Inconel, with its exceptional strength and resistance to high temperatures, is ideal for applications like aerospace, power generation, and heat exchangers. On the other hand, Hastelloy is renowned for its superior corrosion resistance, making it perfect for chemical processing, marine environments, and industries handling harsh acids.
Both alloys offer comparable corrosion-resisting benefits; however, Inconel has a slight advantage when used in oxidizing applications. On the other hand, as it is more molybdenum forward, Hastelloy offers better performance when subjected to reducing corrosion.
Hastelloy is more suitable for acidic environments, while Inconel is better for oxidizing environments.
This is because Hastelloy has a higher molybdenum content, which supplies more resistance in non-oxidizing and acidic environments. On the other hand, higher chromium content in Inconel alloys offers more support in oxidizing environments.

Nickel (Ni): Nickel is the main element for forming and stabilizing austenite structure, giving the alloy good toughness, corrosion resistance and high temperature performance.
Chromium (Cr): Chromium can form a dense chromium oxide protective film on the surface of the alloy, improving the oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance of the alloy.
Iron (Fe): It is an important component of the alloy and helps to adjust the strength and processing properties of the alloy.
ASTM B167 Inconel 601 Seamless Pipes Mechanical Properties
Mechanical & Physical Properties : | |
Density | 8.1 g/cm3 |
Melting Point | 1411 ℃ (2571 °F) |
Tensile Strength | Psi – 80,000 , MPa – 550 |
Yield Strength (0.2%Offset) | Psi – 30,000 , MPa – 205 |
Elongation | 30% |
Tensile strength: This means that the maximum stress that the Inconel 601 pipe can withstand during the stretching process is high and it is not easy to be broken.
Yield strength: It indicates the stress value when the material begins to produce obvious plastic deformation. The higher yield strength ensures that the steel pipe will not undergo plastic deformation prematurely when subjected to a certain pressure and external force.
Elongation: The elongation reflects the proportion of the material elongation after tensile fracture. The higher elongation indicates that the Inconel 601 steel pipe has good plasticity and can withstand a certain degree of deformation without breaking during processing and use.
