Inconel 625
Monel 400
Inconel 625 is also known as Incoloy 625. It is an alloy composed mainly of nickel, chromium and molybdenum with excellent resistance to pitting and corrosion cracking. Alloy 625 has extraordinary mechanical properties at very low and high temperatures. Alloy 625 has high fracture strength and tensile strength with excellent weldability and brazing properties. Alloy 625 has excellent corrosion resistance to inorganic acids such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, etc. The large amount of nickel in the alloy enables it to withstand severe corrosive environments such as neutral salts, alkaline media and seawater.
Monel 400 alloy (Monel 400), also known as Monel 400 or UNS N04400 nickel-copper alloy, is a high-performance nickel-copper alloy material. It is a corrosion-resistant alloy with large dosage, wide application and excellent comprehensive performance. Monel 400 alloy material is composed of 67% nickel and 23% copper, and contains small amounts of elements such as iron and manganese. Inconel 625 :

It also contains a significant amount of niobium (Nb), also known as columbium, along with trace elements such as iron, cobalt, manganese, silicon, aluminum, and titanium. The presence of chromium, molybdenum, and niobium is key to its superior performance. This combination gives Inconel 625 exceptional resistance to rust, corrosion, pitting, and stress corrosion cracking, even in environments containing chlorides and across a wide temperature range.

Monel 400 :
UNS N04400 nickel-copper alloy is mainly composed of nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu), and also contains a small amount of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), carbon (C), silicon (Si) and sulfur (S). Its chemical composition ratio is roughly 63% to 68% nickel, 28% to 34% copper, 2.5% iron. This unique chemical composition design enables Monel 400 alloy to exhibit excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of media.
This alloy's unique composition is derived from naturally occurring ores, making it more cost-effective compared to some other nickel alloys. The high copper content provides Monel 400 with excellent corrosion resistance, allowing it to withstand a variety of harsh environments—including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkalis. Inconel 625:
Significantly higher strength than Monel 400, including tensile strength, yield strength, and creep strength.
Strengthened by a solid solution effect from molybdenum and niobium, and can also be hardened by cold working. Some variants can be age-hardened for even higher strength.
Excellent high-temperature strength and rupture strength, retaining its mechanical properties even at very elevated temperatures (up to around 980°C or 1800°F).
Monel 400:
Good strength and toughness over a wide temperature range, including sub-zero temperatures.
Can only be work-hardened (strengthened by cold working, not by heat treatment).
Good ductility and formability.
Lower overall strength compared to Inconel 625, especially at high temperatures.
Monel 400:
Monel alloy performs particularly well. It resists corrosion in a variety of seawater environments, hydrofluoric acid, and sulfide media, a property that makes it very useful in marine technology, chemical equipment, and petroleum refining. It is highly resistant to hydrofluoric acid (HF) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) under reducing conditions.
Inconel 625:
Inconel 625 has excellent oxidation resistance due to its high chromium content, and performs well in both oxidizing and non-oxidizing acidic environments.
The molybdenum in Inconel 625 enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it suitable for environments containing chloride ions, such as marine and chemical processing applications. It has strong resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, a common problem in many industrial applications. The presence of niobium also helps prevent sensitization and intergranular corrosion during welding.
Inconel 625:
Offers excellent weldability, making it relatively easy to join using various welding methods. The post-weld properties are stable, and it is not prone to hot cracking or weld-related defects. Typically, no preheating or post-weld heat treatment is required.
Monel 400:
Generally exhibits good weldability, but certain precautions may be necessary to prevent porosity or other defects. It is prone to hot cracking and porosity, especially during multi-pass or thick-section welding. The weld metal has relatively low hardenability, making it less suitable for high-stress joints.
Inconel 625 is much more expensive than Monel 400. This is mainly due to several factors:
1. More complex and expensive alloying elements (especially chromium, molybdenum, and niobium).
2. The more complex manufacturing process required to produce this superalloy with advanced properties.
3. The higher strength and hardness also make it more difficult to process, resulting in higher costs.
