In high-pressure pipeline systems, SCH160 steel pipe have also become heavy thick steel pipe, which have been widely used due to their excellent performance and reliable quality.
"SCH" in SCH160 is an abbreviation for "Schedule", indicating the wall thickness grade of the steel pipe. The number "160" does not represent the actual wall thickness, but rather a standardized grade number. Generally speaking, the larger the number, the thicker the pipe wall, and correspondingly, the higher its pressure bearing capacity. Thick walled steel pipes are mainly used to cope with industrial pipeline systems that require extremely high pressure bearing capacity and durability.
According to the widely used standard ASME B36.10M, SCH160 steel pipe have a wide range of nominal pipe diameters, covering from smaller to larger sizes, to meet the needs of different projects. Usually, its pipe diameter ranges from 1/2 inch to 48 inches (corresponding to nominal diameter DN15-DN1200), and steel pipes of different diameters also have differences in wall thickness and other parameters, which can adapt to diverse engineering design requirements.
Processing Method | Seamless Pipe and Welded Pipe |
Diameter | 1/8"- 48" / DN6 - 1500 |
Thickness Schedule | SCH 10S- SCH 160, XXS |
Length | 6m or 12 m or Random |

Surface Treatment | Epoxy Powder FBE, 2PE, 3PE Coating |
The outer diameter sizes of SCH160 steel pipes are diverse, with common outer diameters ranging from 1/2 inch to 24 inches. The selection of different outer diameters depends on various factors such as the flow requirements, spatial layout, and system pressure of the specific project.
The wall thickness also varies depending on the diameter of the pipe, generally ranging from 4.78mm to 59.54mm. A steel pipe with an outer diameter of 2 inches (approximately 50.8mm) has a wall thickness of 11.11mm, while a steel pipe with an outer diameter of 12 inches (approximately 323.9mm) can have a wall thickness of up to 33.32mm. The thicker pipe wall endows the steel pipe with strong compressive strength, allowing it to withstand high pressure from internal fluids and various pressures from the external environment.
Due to differences in outer diameter and wall thickness, the weight of thick walled steel pipes also varies. According to the weight calculation formula for steel pipes, weight (kg/m)=(outer diameter - wall thickness) × wall thickness × 0.02466. Calculated by weight per meter, ranging from a smaller specification of 1.95kg per meter (such as a steel pipe with an outer diameter of 21.3mm and a wall thickness of 4.78mm) to a larger specification of 808.2kg per meter (such as a steel pipe with an outer diameter of 610mm and a wall thickness of 59.54mm). The weight parameter is crucial in engineering construction, as it relates to the support design, transportation costs, and installation difficulty of pipeline systems.

One of the most prominent features of heavy thick steel pipe is their excellent pressure bearing capacity. Under standard operating conditions, it can withstand considerable pressure, and the specific values may fluctuate due to factors such as the material, outer diameter, wall thickness, and usage environment of the steel pipe. This strong pressure bearing capacity enables it to operate stably in high-pressure environments, effectively ensuring the safety and reliability of pipeline systems.

Oil and Gas Industry
In the extraction, transportation, and processing of oil and natural gas, complex and harsh working conditions such as high pressure, flammability, and explosiveness are often encountered. SCH160 steel pipe is widely used in oil well casing, oil and gas pipelines, as well as internal process pipelines in refineries and natural gas processing plants due to their high strength and high pressure bearing capacity.
Chemical Industry
The chemical production process involves numerous corrosive media and high-pressure reaction environments. heavy thick steel pipe can not only withstand high pressure, but also effectively resist the erosion of various chemical substances by selecting suitable materials (such as corrosion-resistant alloy steel materials).
Power Industry
The high temperature and high pressure resistance of heavy thick steel pipe make them an ideal choice for steam pipelines. It can operate stably in a high-temperature and high-pressure steam environment for a long time, ensuring energy transmission efficiency in the power production process and reducing the risk of shutdown caused by pipeline failures.
SCH160 steel pipe play an indispensable role in multiple important industrial fields due to their unique performance advantages. From the diversity of specification parameters, as well as the wide range of pressure bearing capacity and application scope, it is a reliable high-performance pipe material.
