In January this year, we received an order from a Saudi customer for a high-pressure forged fittings. The order included ASTM A182 F92 forged socket weld fittings. ASTM A182 F92 is alloy steel material. It is used in industrial piping systems that require high temperature, high pressure, and high creep resistance.

ASTM A182 F92 is not a common alloy steel material. The common low alloy steel materials on the market are ASTM A182 F11, F12, F22, etc. F92 material is relatively hard to find. To solve this problem, we quickly used multiple channels to source raw materials.

With our long-term supplier network, we solved the raw material supply issue. We scheduled production on the same day we confirmed the raw materials. This ensured the order entered production as soon as possible.

With close teamwork from production, technical, and procurement teams, we completed manufacturing and testing for the ASTM A182 F92 forged fittings. All product properties met ASTM A182 standards and customer technical requirements.

International air freight has strict requirements on packaging size, weight, and protection. We specially designed export wooden crates for air freight for this order. These crates protected the products during long-distance transport. They also helped the customer complete export customs in China and import customs in Saudi Arabia.

With everyone's efforts, we finished production and successfully delivered the ASTM A182 F92 forged fittings by air freight on time. The customer was very satisfied with our professional work in special material sourcing, urgent production scheduling, and air freight logistics. They clearly hope to strengthen future cooperation with us.

ASTM A182 F92 Material Properties

F92 is an upgraded version of F91. Under the same tensile strength and elongation, F92 achieves higher yield strength, better high-temperature creep resistance, and better plasticity (reduction of area). This is due to chemical optimization, especially the addition of tungsten (W) and boron (B).

  • Tungsten (W) 1.5-2.0%: Solid solution strengthening element. It significantly improves high-temperature creep strength.

  • Boron (B) 0.001-0.006%: Strengthening materials to enhance high temperature resistance performance.

  • Niobium (Nb) 0.04-0.09%: Forms carbonitrides. It pins grain boundaries and refines grains.

Heat Treatment

F92 material must go through normalizing and tempering heat treatment.

Tempering

Normalizing austenitizes the grains and creates a martensitic structure. Tempering reduces internal stress and increases toughness.

Why F92 is Better

Stronger creep resistance: Adding tungsten (W) and boron (B) gives F92 much better high-temperature creep strength than F91. Under the same temperature and pressure, F92 allows thinner wall design. This saves material and reduces cost.

Better thermal stability: F92 has higher thermal conductivity and lower thermal expansion. This means less thermal stress during rapid temperature changes. It effectively reduces thermal fatigue damage.

Excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance: 9% chromium content forms a dense oxide film on the surface. This remains stable in high-temperature steam and corrosive environments.

Typical working conditions: Pipes and equipment made of F92 are usually designed for temperatures up to 620°C or higher, and pressures up to 190 bar or higher.

ASTM A182 F92 vs F91

1. Tensile Strength

Both have the same minimum value of 620 MPa. At room temperature, their ultimate strength limits are the same.

2. Yield Strength – F92 has a clear advantage

F92: 440 MPa (min). F91: 415 MPa (min). F92's yield strength is 25 MPa (about 6%) higher. This is a key difference. Yield strength is the stress at which permanent deformation starts. In high-pressure piping design, yield strength is often used to calculate allowable stress. Higher yield strength of F92 means it can handle higher internal pressure. Or, under the same pressure, it allows thinner walls. This reduces weight, welding difficulty, and cost.

3. Elongation – Both are the same

Both have the same minimum value of 20%. This measures plastic deformation before fracture. F92 improves strength without sacrificing basic plasticity. It keeps similar room temperature ductility to F91. This is important for cold forming and bending.

4. Reduction of Area – F92 is better

F92: 45% (min). F91: 40% (min). Reduction of area is more sensitive than elongation in showing true plasticity and toughness, especially under stress concentration. The higher requirement for F92 (5% higher) means its internal structure is more uniform and cleaner. It has better resistance to brittle fracture. This is a quality advantage of F92.

5. Hardness

F92: 269 HB max (only upper limit). F91: 190-245 HB (upper and lower limits). F92's higher hardness limit (269 vs 245) confirms its higher strength. For F92, the standard only cares that it is not too hard (to avoid brittleness). It allows the material to reach naturally higher hardness. F91 has a lower limit (190 HB). This ensures that after heat treatment (normalizing and tempering), the material has the correct martensitic structure. It avoids low strength due to improper tempering.

Applications

ASTM A182 F92 is a high-performance martensitic heat-resistant steel. It is designed for high temperature, high pressure, and high creep resistance. It is typically used in the following industrial piping systems.

Power Industry

This is the main application for F92. It is used in supercritical (SC) and ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plants and combined cycle power plants.

Main steam pipeline: directly connected to the boiler and turbine, capable of withstanding the high temperature and pressure generated by the boiler.Reheat steam pipes: Include hot reheat and cold reheat steam pipes.

Feed water pipes: Used in high-pressure feed water systems.

Key power plant valves: Such as main steam isolation valves (MSIV) and bypass valves. These valves require high strength and long-term stability at high temperatures.

Other Industrial Applications

Besides power, F92 fittings are also used in other industries involving high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive media.

Petrochemical and refining: Used in process piping systems that handle high temperature, high pressure, and possibly corrosive media. The high chromium (Cr) content in F92 provides good high-temperature corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance.

Chemical industry: Used in piping systems that must withstand high temperature, high pressure, and chemical attack.

Types of ASME B16.11 Forged Fittings

ASME B16.11 covers two main types: socket weld fittings and threaded fittings. These fittings are used in high-pressure piping systems. They connect pipes and change pipe direction.

Applications of ASME B16.11 Forged Fittings

Petrochemical industry: Used for transporting various oils and chemicals. They have good corrosion resistance and high pressure resistance.

Natural gas transmission: Can handle high pressure and low temperatures. They ensure safe and stable natural gas transmission.

Refrigeration industry: Used for refrigerant transport. Their good corrosion resistance and mechanical strength ensure long-term stable operation of refrigeration systems.

Other industries: Also widely used in medicine, food, power, marine, and many other industries. They provide reliable support for fluid transport systems.

In summary, ASME B16.11 forged fittings are high-quality, high-performance products with broad application prospects.
