American standard seamless pipe manufacturing standard is mainly developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
ASME B36.10M and ASME B36.19M are important standards for the size of seamless pipes in the American standard. Among them, ASME B36.10M specifies the dimensions of welded and seamless rolled steel pipes, which are applicable to materials such as carbon steel and alloy steel; ASME B36.19M specifically standardizes the dimensions of stainless steel pipes, and together they form the American standard seamless pipe size specification system.
Applicable materials: ASME B36.10M is mainly suitable for seamless and welded pipes made of black metal materials such as carbon steel and low-alloy steel. These materials have high strength and good comprehensive mechanical properties, and are widely used in applications that do not require high corrosion resistance but need to withstand high pressure and high temperature, such as oil and gas transmission pipelines, power plant boiler pipelines, etc; ASME B36.19M is specifically designed for stainless steel pipelines, utilizing the excellent corrosion resistance of stainless steel to meet the high requirements for pipeline cleanliness and corrosion resistance in industries such as food, medicine, and chemical.
Wall thickness difference: Stainless steel pipes in ASME B36.19M are allowed to use thinner wall thickness designs, such as SCH5S, SCH10S and other thin-walled series, due to their high material strength and corrosion resistance, while meeting the same engineering mechanical performance requirements; In contrast, carbon steel and alloy steel pipelines in ASME B36.10M typically use thicker wall thicknesses, such as SCH40, SCH80, etc., to cope with high pressure, high temperature, and complex stress environments, in order to ensure the strength and durability of the pipeline.
Application: Based on the characteristics of the above materials and wall thickness, pipelines under the ASME B36.10M standard are widely used in industrial infrastructure construction, such as energy extraction and transmission, power production, and other links; ASME B36.19M standard stainless steel pipes are mainly used in precision processing industries that have strict requirements for product quality, hygiene conditions, and corrosion resistance, such as material conveying pipelines in pharmaceutical factories and liquid conveying pipelines in food processing factories.
The Dimension of seamless pipes is extremely wide, with nominal diameter (NPS) ranging from 1/8” to 24” (DN6- DN600). Different pipe diameters are matched with various wall thickness specifications, commonly including SCH30, SCH40, STD, XS, SCH80, SCH160, XXS, etc. The choice of wall thickness depends on factors such as pressure level and fluid corrosiveness in the pipeline application scenario.

1.Weigh the pipe one by one.
2.Calculate the weight by formula.
3.Stainless Steel Pipes Wall Thickness & Weight Chart.
In terms of weight, the weight of seamless pipes is directly related to their diameter and wall thickness.
Weight=(OD – T) x T x 0.02466x L
OD=Outer Diameter(mm)
T=Wall Thickness(mm)
L=Length(m)
For example, the weight of A106B carbon steel pipe with an outer diameter of 8 inches, wall thickness of SCH40, and a length of 6 meters can be calculated using this formula.
Firstly, convert inches to millimeter sizes, 8 inches=219.1mm; SCH40=8.18mm. Then, using the formula, it can be calculated that:
Weight=(219.1mm-8.18mm) x 8.18mm x 0.02466 x 6m=255.3KG.
In terms of manufacturing process standards, the ASTM series standards play a key role. For example, ASTM A106 "Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High Temperature Service" specifies the manufacturing requirements for seamless carbon steel pipes in high-temperature environments.
From raw material selection to processing technology, to final product inspection, there are detailed and strict specifications to ensure that the steel pipes can operate safely and reliably under harsh conditions such as high temperature and high pressure.
Taking ASTM A106 Gr. B as an example, this is a commonly used carbon steel seamless pipe material in high-temperature operations. The carbon content is generally between 0.29% and 0.36%, the manganese content is between 0.88% and 1.15%, and the phosphorus and sulfur impurity content is strictly controlled, not exceeding 0.035% respectively. In terms of mechanical properties, the minimum yield strength is 240MPa and the minimum tensile strength is 415MPa. It can still maintain good strength and toughness in high temperature environments and is suitable for scenarios such as high temperature and high pressure steam pipelines and petrochemical pipelines.

ASTM A335 P22 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo) alloy steel seamless pipe contains a certain proportion of chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo) elements. Chromium element can enhance the oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance of steel, while molybdenum element enhances high-temperature strength and creep resistance. Its carbon content is about 0.05% -0.15%, chromium content is 1.90% -2.60%, and molybdenum content is 0.87% -1.13%. This material has excellent durability at high temperatures and is widely used in high-temperature components such as power plant boiler superheaters and reheaters.

ASTM A312 TP304 Seamless Steel Pipe
Taking the common 304 stainless steel (ASTM A312 TP304) as an example, its main alloying elements are chromium (≥ 18%) and nickel (≥ 8%). High chromium content forms a dense oxide film on its surface, endowing it with good corrosion resistance, while nickel element enhances the toughness and processing performance of the material. The carbon content generally does not exceed 0.08%, with a tensile strength of ≥ 515MPa and a yield strength of ≥ 205MPa. It is commonly used in industries such as food and beverage, medical equipment, and building decoration that require high corrosion resistance and hygiene.

SAF 2205 duplex stainless steel, composed of ferrite and austenite phases, combines the advantages of both. Its chromium content is about 22%, nickel content is 5.5% -6.5%, molybdenum content is 3% -3.5%, and nitrogen content is 0.14% -0.20%. This alloy composition gives it high strength (yield strength ≥ 450MPa) and excellent corrosion resistance, especially in harsh corrosive environments such as chloride ions.
