Shanghai Zhucheng Pipe Fitting Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has long focused on industrial pipes and fittings, serving many domestic and international customers. Butt-weld fittings are one of our main products, regularly supplied to a long-standing Canadian client. In March of this year, this customer placed a new order for custom ASTM A234 WPB reducers to be manufactured according to their drawings.
The unique requirement was that while the end outer diameter and wall thickness had to meet ASME B16.9 standards, the overall height had to be custom-made per the customer's drawing, significantly different from standard dimensions:

Size (inches) | Standard Height (ASME B16.9) | Height per Drawing | Reduction |
26" × 16" | 508 mm | 436 mm | -72 mm |
20" × 12" | 508 mm | 327 mm | -181 mm |
20" × 14" | 508 mm | 382 mm | -126 mm |
In response to the drawing requirements, our technical department recalculated blank dimensions and adjusted production parameters. This ensured a smooth conical transition and uniform wall thickness while staying within standard tolerances. Strict quality control was followed throughout the entire process.
Because the reduced height made the transition angle much steeper, we recalculated material layout and adjusted the press-forming process. This guaranteed a smooth transition, uniform wall thickness, and controlled wall thinning within acceptable limits.
Before shipment, professional inspectors measured every product, repeatedly verifying and photographing the reducer heights. All products met the customer's dimensional requirements 100% and were delivered on time, earning customer approval.

Butt-weld fittings are core components for connecting and redirecting industrial pipelines. ASTM A234 carbon steel fittings are globally recognized for their strict standards, excellent mechanical properties, and wide applicability.
ASTM A234, established by ASTM International, is the standard for carbon and alloy steel butt-weld fittings used in medium to high-temperature pressure piping systems. It strictly defines chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment, and non-destructive testing methods, helping prevent leaks or ruptures caused by poor-quality fittings.
Fittings under this standard are compatible with ASME B16.9 dimensional requirements, allowing them to work seamlessly with pipes and valves from different manufacturers.
WPB is the most widely used carbon steel grade under ASTM A234. The "W" stands for Weldability, "P" for Pressure, and "B" indicates the grade. Its core characteristics are strength and good weldability, making it suitable for medium to high-pressure pipelines.
Chemical Composition
Material | C | Mn | P | S | Si | Cr | Mo | Ni | Cu | V |
A234 WPB (Max) | 0.30 | 1.06 | 0.050 | 0.058 | 0.10(min) | 0.40 | 0.15 | 0.40 | 0.40 | 0.08 |
Mechanical Properties
Material | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Hardness (HB) |
A234 WPB | 415 min | 240 min | 22 min | 197 max |
Excellent Mechanical Properties: Minimum yield strength of 240 MPa, tensile strength of 415 MPa, and elongation of 22%.
Good Weldability: Carbon content below 0.30% means low carbon equivalent, allowing good weld quality without complex preheating.
Wide Temperature Range: Suitable for -29°C to 425°C, covering most industrial pipeline conditions.
These features make WPB the most commonly used carbon steel for ASME B16.9 butt-weld fittings, offering good availability and cost advantages.

ASME B16.9 is the international standard for butt-weld fittings, covering sizes from NPS 1/2" to 48" (DN15 to DN1200). It standardizes dimensions, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing for elbows, tees, reducers, caps, and more. These fittings are widely used in oil, gas, chemical, power, marine, and pharmaceutical industries.

High Strength: Butt-weld connection creates a strong joint that withstands high pressure, temperature, vibration, and thermal expansion.
Smooth Flow: Inner wall transitions flush with the pipe, minimizing flow resistance.
Leak-Free: No gaskets or seals eliminates common leakage risks.
Versatile: Both concentric and eccentric designs available for different scenarios.
Customizable: Standard sizes from NPS 1/2" to 48", plus custom options per drawing.
Concentric reducers are the most common type, with aligned centers and a conical shape. They are widely used in:
Petrochemical Industry: Connecting different diameter pipes in large projects, often with A106 Gr. B or API 5L Gr. B line pipe.
Power Engineering: Boiler feed water systems, main steam lines, and bypass systems.
Water Treatment & Environmental Engineering: Pump stations, municipal water supply, wastewater treatment, and flue gas desulfurization.
Food & Pharmaceutical Industry: Beverage filling, dairy production, and sterile piping systems (usually in stainless steel for hygiene).
HVAC Systems: Chilled water and cooling water lines in large buildings.
