Stainless steel threaded pipe fittings are pipe fittings that connect pipes to pipes, pipes to valves, and pipes to equipment in pipeline systems through threaded connections. They are convenient to install and disassemble due to their unique threaded connection method, and are widely used in medium and low pressure fluid systems, such as the transportation of water, oil, gas, steam, etc., due to the excellent performance of stainless steel. It has the advantages of easy installation, flexible disassembly, good sealing, and no need for welding.
1. Corrosion resistance: stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance to atmospheric corrosion, acid, alkali solution and salt solution.
2. Mechanical strength: It has good mechanical properties, high tensile strength and yield strength.
3. Machinability: It is easy to weld, polish and process into various shapes.
4. Heat resistance: It can be used in high temperature environment below 800℃ and maintain good mechanical properties.
This Standard covers ratings, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and material requirements for forged fittings, both socket-welding and threaded, as illustrated in Tables 1 through 5 and Tables I-1 through I-5, inclusive.
Special Fittings
Fittings with special dimensions, threads, or counterbores may be made by agreement between the manufacturer and purchaser. When such fittings meet all other stipulations of this Standard, they shall be considered in compliance therewith, provided they are appropriately marked.
Welding
Installation welding requirements are not within the scope of this Standard. Installation welding shall be in accordance with the applicable piping Code or regulation covering the piping system into which the fittings are installed.
Fittings under this Standard shall be designated as Class 2000, 3000, and 6000 for threaded end fittings and Class 3000, 6000, and 9000 for socket-weld end fittings.
Standard Code | Standard Name | Region / Organization |
ASME B16.11 | Forged Fittings, Socket-Welding and Threaded | USA (ASME) |
ASTM A182 | Forged or Rolled Alloy and Stainless Steel Pipe Flanges, Forged Fittings | USA (ASTM) |
EN 10241 | Steel threaded pipe fittings | European (EN) |
DIN 2999 / DIN EN 10226 | Pipe threads where pressure-tight joints are made on the threads (BSPT) | Germany (DIN) / EU |
BS 3799 | Steel pipe fittings, screwed and socket-welding for the petroleum industry | UK (British Standard) |
MSS SP-83 | Class 3000 Steel Pipe Unions, Socket-Welding and Threaded | USA (MSS) |
NPT (National Pipe Taper): This is a national standard tapered pipe thread, more common in the United States and Canada. Its threads have a taper, and the seal is achieved through the self-compression of the threads.
BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper): This is a British standard tapered pipe thread, similar to NPT but with a 55° thread angle. It's widely used in Europe and Commonwealth countries.
BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel): This is a British standard parallel pipe thread. Since the threads are parallel, they require the use of a sealing gasket to ensure a leak-tight seal.
Threaded Length:
The length of the threaded portion must comply with NPT standards for a tight, secure fit.
Nominal Pipe Size (NPS):
The NPS is used to designate the size of the forged threaded fittings. For example, a 1/2” fitting has a 1/2” NPS.
Wall Thickness:
The threaded elbows and threaded tees wall thickness must comply with the class designation (2000, 3000, or 6000) to handle the pressure rating associated with that class.
