What is NPT Threaded Plug
NPT, which is national pipe taper, is a U.S. standard for tapered threads that is widely used on pipes and fittings. NPT connections rely on thread deformation, which is a metal to metal sealing design where the threads of the connectors themselves form together.
There are three types of NPT threaded plug that hex head, round head and square head. Pipe plugs are used as end caps for fractional pipes in many industries. These pipe plugs are available in carbon steel & stainless steel and used by inserting them into the end of the pipe to block the flow.
NPT threaded plugs offer many advantages for product protection. These plugs can be inserted into threaded openings, providing a more stable and consistent seal and preventing dirt, moisture or other contaminants from affecting your threads.
Threaded pipes find extensive application in various fields. They are commonly used for connecting water supply lines, faucets, and fixtures.
How NPT Thread Works
NPT pipe threads use thread taper to make a strong connection. During wrench tightening, the thread taper wedges the male and female thread flanks together. When installed correctly, this wedging creates elastic compression between the threads. The elastic thread deformation of the threads creates something like a spring tension that holds the threads tightly together. Thread deformation, combined with friction (interference fit) between the flank surfaces, locks the threads together in a strong, tight connection that will not vibrate loose.
Advantage of NPT Thread
NPT tapered thread is utilized for unlike straight thread, NPT thread can be pulled tightly to seal fluid or air-tight. Straight thread applications are designed to simply hold pieces together, whereas a tapered thread, when torque is applied, will compress and seal the fitting.
