There are 3 types of ASME/ANSI B16.11 stainless steel threaded plug that hex head, round head and square head. Pipe plugs are used as end caps for fractional pipes in many industries. These pipe plugs are available in carbon steel & stainless steel and used by inserting them into the end of the pipe to block the flow.
Threaded plug function is the same as the function of the ASME B16.9 steel pipe cap and ASME B16.11 socket weld cap.
The hex head pipe plug is a stainless steel threaded pipe fitting with male national pipe taper (NPT) threads for closing the end of a female threaded pipe. The plug inserts into female pipes or fittings and connects with NPT threads, which create a tighter seal than straight threads, and it has a hexagonal head for increased leverage and uses with a wrench during installation and disassembly.
Threaded pipe fittings come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can provide an effective seal for pipes transporting liquids, gas and steam. They twist onto pipe using various male and female thread connections including NPT or BSP.
