What is Butt Weld Tee
ASME B16.9 steel pipe tee is T-shaped or Y-shaped with three outlets in same or different size and named as equal tee and reducing tee. The connecting ends are in same sizes, it is equal tee, while brach size is smaller than run pipe size, we call it as reducing tee. Butt weld reducing tee fittings have smaller sized tube on the branch port. Reducing tees are a common component of vacuum piping systems and are used to provide a reduced sized 90 degree branch.
Sch40 on pipe tee fittings means that it can hold 40 kg of pressure. The most common pipe schedule is Schedule 40 Steel Pipe Tee. It can be galvanised, but it doesn't have to be, and is usually used for water and gas lines.
4" SCH40 Butt Weld Tee is widely used in petroleum, chemical ndustry, power plant and other industrial pipelines. The common used material are carbon steel A234 WPB and stainless steel 316.

Standard for ASME B16.9 Butt Weld Tee
ASME B 16.9 governs scope, pressure ratings, size, marking, material, fitting dimensions, surface contours, end preparation, design proof tests, production tests, and tolerances. This standardization ensures that fittings are produced as they should be to scope and specifications, making it easier to integrate new parts to existing parts, and ensuring safety, strength, and stability.
The ASME B16.9 4" SCH40 butt weld tee is a three-way fitting used to make perpendicular connections to a pipe. Its name comes from its resemblance to the letter T. The ASME B16.9 straight cross is a four-way fitting used to make double perpendicular connections to the pipe. It resembles a crossroad. Lines that connect to the main run of pipe are knownn as “branches”. The main run of pipe is often called the “header”. The word “straight” denotes that all three(for tee) or four(for cross) outlets are the same pipe size.
Types of Butt Weld Tee
Equal Tee
Equal diameter tee, also known as straight tee, the branch diameter of the tee is the same as the pipe diameter of the tee.
Reducing Tee
The reducing tee has two outlets cut at 90 degrees with the main pipe, and the size of the branch pipe is smaller than the port of the pipeline
Equal Tee VS Reducing Tee
Steel Equal Tee pipe fittings: The three branches of tee have same diameters, such as 4" SCH40 Butt Weld Tee.
Steel Reducing Tee: The branch diameter is smaller than the main line diameter. Tee reducer is usually described as NPS diameters in 4”x 4”x 3”, 4”is the main line pipe diameter, and 3”is the reducing branch.
Features of 4" SCH40 Butt Weld Tee
Good general corrosion resistance and high strength
Good sulfide stress corrosion resistance
Resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion
Higher resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking
Easy to weld and conform
