What is ASME B16.11 Threaded Plug
ASME B16.11 Threaded plug from plugs offer many advantages for product protection. These plugs can be inserted into threaded openings, providing a more stable and consistent seal and preventing dirt, moisture or other contaminants from affecting your threads.
A plug is a male threaded fitting which seals the end run of a pipe when fitted into a female threaded fitting. An end cap is a female threaded fitting and is threaded over the end of a piece of pipe to seal it off.
When using ASME B16.11 threaded plug, you are doing one of three things: stopping the flow in a pipeline or opening; by passing the flow running through the pipeline, or. performing a low-pressure air test on a new pipeline before placing it into service; or testing a pipeline already in service for leaks.
Specification of Thread Plug
ASME B16.11 threaded plug come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can provide an effective seal for pipes transporting liquids, gas and steam. They twist onto pipe using various male and female thread connections including NPT or BSP.

Standard for ASME B16.11
ASME B16.11 is the standard for the forged steel fittings, including socket weld and threaded type. Material including carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel. Also described as Class 2000, 3000, 6000 threaded end fittings and Class 3000, 6000, and 9000 for socket weld end fittings.
This standard contains pressure-temperature ratings, dimensions, tolerances, markings and material requirements for forged and threaded forged fittings. The relevant contents will be shown in below tables in this article.
This standard does not require a pressure test, but the fittings shall be able to withstand the hydrostatic test pressure required by the applicable pipe code to accommodate seamless pipe of material equivalent to the fittings forging and of the schedule or wall thickness associated with the fittings grade and end connection.
Classification of Threaded Plug
There are 3 types of ASME B16.11 threaded plug that hex head, round head and square head.Pipe plugs are used as end caps for fractional pipes in many industries. These pipe plugs are available in carbon steel & stainless steel and used by inserting them into the end of the pipe to block the flow.
Hex Head Plug
Hex plug is an important pipe fitting. Like a normal pipe plug, the hex pipe plug is threaded in the end and the cover or the top of the plug takes a hexagon shape. The hex pipe plugs are considered an easy and cost effective way to plug your pipe. The basic purpose is to stop the flow.
Round Head Plug
American threaded round head plug is used to plug into the pipe end by male threaded connection, so to block the pipeline and form liquid or gas tight seal.
Square Head Plug
A Square Pipe Plug has a male pipe thread on one end and a closed off square shaped plug at the other end. It differs from a Hex Plug only in that it has a square shape head instead of a Hexagon head.
What are the advantages of threaded fittings
Ease of installation: Threaded fittings are easy to install and don’t require specialized tools or welding knowledge.
Flexibility: Threaded fittings can be easily adjusted or removed as needed, making them versatile and adaptable to different piping needs.
Accessibility: Threaded fittings can be used in hard-to-reach areas where welding or other connection methods may be difficult.
Leak-proof connections: Threaded fittings provide a tight, leak-proof connection that is durable and long-lasting.
