What is Lap Joint Flange in ASME B16.5
ASME B16.5 is the most common used standard specification for manufacturing cast and forged steel pipe flange.
ASME B16.5 lap joint flange is a two piece device. One piece is a sleeve called "Stub-end" and is shaped like a short piece of pipe with a weld bevel on one end and a narrow shoulder on the other end called the hub. The hub is the same outside diameter as the raised face of a weld neck flange. The thickness of the hub is normally about 1/4" to 3/8". There is a rounded transition on the back face of the hub that joins the hub to the sleeve.
Lap joint pipe flanges slide directly over the pipe and are usually used with stub end fittings. A pipe is often welded to the stub end and the lap joint pipe flange is free to rotate around the stub end. Lap joint pipe flanges are often used for applications that require frequent dismantling.
What is ASME B16.5
ASME B16. 5 is limited to flanges and flanged fittings that are made from cast or forged materials, together with blind flanges and certain reducing flanges made cast, forged or plate materials. Also included in this Standard are requirements and recommendations regarding flange bolting, flange gaskets, and flange joints.
Types of ASME B16.5 Flanges
ASME B16.5 flange come in a variety of types, including welding neck flanges, slip on flanges, socket flanges, threaded flanges, lap joint flanges, and blind flanges. They are suitable for connecting various types of pipelines and equipment.
Flange Rating for ASME B16.5 Lap Joint Flange
There are 7 pressure classes for lap joint flange in ASME B16.5. They are Class 150; Class 300; Class 400; Class 600; Class 900; Class 1500 and Class 2500.
Materials of ASME B16.5 Flange
Carbon steel | ASTM A105 |
Low temperature steel | ASTM A350 LF2/3 |
Pipeline steel | ASTM A694 F42/46/52/56/60/65/70 |
Alloy steel | ASTM A182 F5/9/11/12/22/91/92 |
Stainless Steel | ASTM A182 F304/316/317/310S/321/347/904L |
Difference Between ASME and ANSI Flanges
ASME flanges adhere to the rigorous standards established by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, focusing on precision engineering and performance excellence.
ANSI flanges abide by standards the American National Standards Institute set forth, emphasizing compatibility and interchangeability.
