What is ASME B16.5 Socket Weld Flange
ASME B16.5 Socket weld flange and slip on flange are similar in the appearance, but socket weld flange has a socket end at the inner bore of the flange, which makes them different. All forged steel flange share same standards, ASME B16.5 is the one compiled by American Society of Mechanical Engineers and it is the most commonly used one. So ASME B16.5 socket weld flange is the most commonly used socket weld flange.
Material Specification of ASME B16.5 Forged Steel Flange
For ASME standard forged steel flanges, there are mainly five different kinds of material, carbon steel low temp carbon steel, pipeline steel, alloy steel and stainless steel. Sure these material can be applied to manufacture ASME B16.5 socket weld flange.
Standard | ANSI / ASME B16.5 |
Carbon Steel | ASTM A105 / A105N |
Low Temp Carbon Steel | ASTM A350 LF2 / LF3 |
Pipeline Steel | ASTM A694 F42 / 46 / 56 / 60 / 65 |
Alloy Steel | ASTM A182 F11 / 12 / 12 / 5 / 9 / 91 / 92 |
Stainless Steel | ASTM A182 F304 / 304L / 304H, 316 / 316L, 310S, 317, 347, 904L |

Advantage and Disadvantage of Socket weld flange
Advantages
(1) Lower risk of leaking.
(2) No need of being treated before welding.
(3) Won’t hurt the pipe cause the welding process happens outside
So when the inside welding is difficult to operate, socket weld flange is more recommended. Disadvantages:
(1) Higher requirement of welding technique
(2) May cause the corrosive problem.
So socket weld flange is seldom applied in corrosive or radioactive environment, as this solid buildup at the joint can cause operational and maintenance problems.
Manufacturing Standard of Forged Steel Flange
ASME B16.5 socket weld flange should follow ASME B16.5 standard , this standard covers technical requirements for flanges whose size below 24 inches, including dimensions, pressures, tolerance, tests markings and son on. The types of flanges ASME B 16.5 covers is very wide, such as weld neck flanges, socket weld flanges , slip-on flanges, blind flanges, threaded flanges, lap joint flanges and flange olets.
