What is ASTM A105 Socket Weld Elbow
An elbow is a kind of pipe fittings usually used to connect two pipes ends at one certain degree, in different angels we will use different elbows, 45 degree, 90 degree, 180 degree and other specific angels. Different by their end connection type, we have butt weld elbow, socket weld elbow and threaded elbow, the last two types (forged elbow) only have 45 degree and 90 degree ones. Among them, ASTM A105 socket weld elbow is the one used when the connection is in socket weld type and the pipeline in carbon steel material.
Chemical Composition and Mechanical Properties of ASTM A105 material
ASTM stands for"American Society for Testing and Materials", is a national organization that make and promote technical standard for various kinds of materials, products, systems and services. As their standard ASTM A105 is the most commonly used carbon steel material in forged pipe components such as fittings and flanges, which has a good performance in pressure systems. Of course in these application include our subject of ASTM A105 socket weld elbows.
Chemical Composition
Elements | Composition, % |
Carbon [C] | ≤0.35 |
Manganese [Mn] | 0.60-1.05 |
Phosphorus [P] | ≤0.35 |
Sulfur [S] | ≤0.40 |
Silicon [Si] | 0.10-0.35 |

Nickel [Ni] | ≤0.40 |
Chromium [Cr] | ≤0.30 |
Molybdenum [Mo] | ≤0.12 |
Vanadium [V] | ≤0.08 |
Please notice:
(1)The sum of Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo and V shall not exceed 1.00%.
(2)The sum of Cr and Mo shall not exceed 0.32%.
(3)The carbon equivalent CE=[C+Mn/6+(Cr+Mo+V)/5+(Ni+Cu)/15] shall be no greater than 0.47.

Specification of ASME B16.11 Socket Weld Elbow
45 Degree Socket Weld Elbow
90 Degree Socket Weld Elbow
There are three different pressure rating for ASME B16.11 socket weld elbows, class 3000/6000/9000, and basing on the angel there are 45 degree ones and 90 degree ones. Also the dimension of the two ends can be different in that case we will have a reducing socket weld elbow.

Inspection and Package of ASTM A105 Socket Weld Elbows
We will proceed the inspection as the standard requirement, including checking one outer diameter, inner diameter, wall thickness, markings , materials and so on.
For package, usually for forged fittings size under 2 inches, we will use plastic bags first and the in cartoon, finally fit in wooden case. For larger size, we just label them in the wooden case.
