What is a Blind Flange

Class 150 blind flange is a solid steel piece with no bore (interior diameter) and primarily designed to cap off a line.

The three most popular forms of face connections for class 150 blind flanges are typically going to match the mating flange in question. These include raised face, flat face, and ring joint (RTJ) face seals. The first two are more common in basic sealing applications, with RTJ being the face of choice for higher pressure applications.

As the majority of flange connections allow for the passing through of air or fluid via an interior opening, blinds give the ends of pipe connections a well formed termination point or rerouting of the media in question towards another portion of the pipe assembly. Opt for a blind flange in these cases, as well as in instances when a pipe line requires a future modification such as the installation of a valve or fitting to reroute flow.

ASME B16.47 Blind Flange

Blind flange is a flange without a hole in the middle, used to seal pipeline openings. The formal name of blind plate is flange cover, which plays the same function as the head and pipe cap. However, blind plate sealing is a detachable sealing device, while head sealing is not detachable.

ASME B16.47 flanges refer to large diameter pipe flanges manufactured in accordance with ASME B16.47, which covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and testing for the flanges. These flanges can be provided in sizes NPS 26 through NPS 60 with rating class designations 75, 150, 300, 400, 600, and 900. NPS is the designation for nominal flange size. It is related to the reference nominal diameter, DN, used in international and other standards.

ASME B16.5 Blind Flange

ASME B16. 5 is limited to flanges and flanged fittings made from cast or forged materials, and blind flanges and certain reducing flanges made from cast, forged, or plate materials. Also included in this Standard are requirements and recommendations regarding flange bolting, flange gaskets, and flange joints. ASME B16. 5 provides seven pressure classes for flanges. They are Classes 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500.

Blind flange have same similar function as plug or cap, all of them are used to block off a section of piping system. It is different as the others flanges, there is no hub and bore in the center. Forged steel flange is a disc-shaped piece of equipment used to connect a pipe to fittings or valve or other component to form a pipework system. Usually flange has been attached to pipe or tube end to, and then a gasket is inserted in the middle to form a seal. Finally they are joined together with bolts and nuts.
