What is Class 3000 Socket Weld Cross
Socket welding (SW) is applied to weld pipes and fittings include cross, tee, elbow. Socket weld crosses are used to permanently join pipes that are inserted into a recess in the fitting, flange or valve. Once correctly inserted, fillet type sealing welds are applied to join the pipe to the fitting.
Class 3000 socket weld fittings involve socket weld crosses. They are produced to as standard of BS3799 and ANSI B16. 11 and used only in conjunction with ANSI Pipe and are available in the same size range.
Socket weld cross comes in a pressure rating of 3000 pound, 6000 pound, 9000 pound. Loosely, they are related. Socket weld crosses are available from 1/2 inch all the way to 4 inch nominal pipe size.

Advantages of Socket Weld Cross
1. Class 3000 socket weld cross is easy to install.
2. Class 3000 socket weld cross can be used in place of threaded fittings, which reduce leak risk greatly.
3. Radiography is not practical on the fillet weld.
4. Construction costs are lower than with butt weld joint.
How are socket fusion welds inspected
1. Check that the beads between pipe and fitting are uniform on both sides of the joint.
2. Examine the weld beads for signs of contamination or degradation.
3. Check for misalignment between the pipe and fitting.
4. Examine the heated tool for signs of degraded material.
